Khir Johari - the Education Minister back in the 60s, decided to "shift" Jawi to Rumi as a way to popularise Bahasa Melayu. To enable me to reply back using Jawi online. To enable me to learn and interpret Jawi writings that I occasionally saw online. Why develop this Jawi To Rumi translator? Although the writing looks like Arab however, I need to point out that Jawi is NOT Arabic and when a person reads Jawi sentences, it sounds exactly like Bahasa Melayu. Similar to romanized Hokkien (Pe̍h-ōe-jī), romanized Mandarin (Hanyu Pinyin) and romanized Tamil from Ariccuvaṭi script. Rumi is a romanized writing system of Jawi. It is used for writing Malay, Acehnese, Banjarese, Minangkabau, Tausūg and several other languages in Southeast Asia. Jawi is a writing system that resemble the Arabic script.
